Sony D-2 and D-12 cheap sounding CD player subsitutes

I have heard these devices are easily to modify for much better sound due to the larger size and design. Does anyone have experience on them?
what modifications can be done?

As far as I know, no one upgrades the audio circuit on a D2/12. However, if you insist on it, you can consider the AD1868 audio circuit copied from a DENON DCP150, it helps a lot on the audio quality.
